ATTENTION: The SafeMate pocket breathalyzer is a Chinese knockoff of the more advance Japanese made AlcAlert BT5500 Breathalyzer. Do not confuse the two alcohol testers when making your purchase.

*MEMS is the abbreviation for Microelectro-Mechanical Systems, a technology developed at the University of California at Berkley that employs miniscule silicon sensors or "motes" a.k.a "Smart Dust". Smart Dust, as the name implies, is the equivalent of coating a receptor microchip with micro fine powder consisting of millions of individual smart sensor motes. The use of MEMS, or smart dust, exponentially increases the sensitivity and detection effectiveness of the receptor microchip in identifying and quantifying targeted molecules (hydrocarbons in the case of alcohol breath analyzers). This increased sensitivity and accuracy however can be more readily compromised by cigarette smoke or other contaminates in the air. Therefore it is extremely important that MEMS devices be used as free from ambient smoke as possible.

Caution: Do not rely upon the analyzer to determine the level of intoxication or whether you are legally able to drive or operate equipment. Safe-Mate is designed to be used as a reference measure only to aid in indicating the level of alcohol present in the blood. Under no circumstances should the user rely on the readings of Safe-Mate to determine intoxication levels that may result in decisions to operate vehicles or equipment or participate in any type of dangerous activity. Safe-Mate makes no reference whatsoever to blood alcohol content tables or other such measures of intoxication promulgated by government, medical or other agencies or bodies.

After drinking 1/2 of one beer the device read .12 After drinking 3 beers, the device read .12. After drinking 3 glasses of wine the device read .12. The calibration makes no sense and apparently is not even close to being accurate. (Posted on 4/30/12)
